Bruce Powers Allbright

Bruce Powers Allbright, 96, a fourth-generation Texan, passed away on May 1, 2008. He was born in San Marcos, Texas to Bruce and Myrtle Elizabeth (Powers) Allbright. He lived his early years in Lockhart, and attended the San Marcos Military Academy and later, Texas Christian University.
He was preceded in death by Anne, his beloved wife of 68 years, who passed on Sept.

19, 2001.
Survivors include his sons, Bruce P., Jr., and James Allen, both of Lockhart; sister, Mary Elizabeth Betty of Glendale, Calif., who passed away just days later; granddaughter Allison Anne Weber of St. Louis, Mo.; and nieces, Karan Allbright of Oklahoma City, Barbara Sherfy of Glendale, Calif., Bonnie Barnes of Austin and Shirley Hightower of Ponte Verde Beach, Fla.; nephew John Ireland Allbright of Bastrop; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
On April 16, 1935, he married Anne Allen of Dallas. In 1942, aft 10 years of employment with Dunn and Bradstreet in Dallas, Kansas City and Chicago, he resigned to accept a commission as an Aviator in the U.S. Navy. He served as a Navy pilot and later as a flight instructor for the Free French and British Kaydets sent to the United States for flight training. His brother, Jack, served in Italy, and his brother, Ireland, on a sub-chaser in the North Atlantic during World War II. His son, Bruce, served in the U.S. Army from 1959 – 1961.
In 1947, he opened a Chevrolet dealership with his brother, Ireland. In Bastrop, he became active in civic affairs, including the American Legion, Post 533, Chamber of Commerce president, member of the Lions Club and in charge of the U.S. Draft Board for Bastrop County. He was also associated with a Chevrolet and Buick dealership in Junction, Texas.
In 1953, he joined Cummins-Chicago Corp., a division of the Cummins-American Corporation, in their Houston office. In 1960, he became the Vice President and National Manager of Branch Operations in Chicago. In 1964, he was elected executive vice president and CEO of the Allison Division of Cummins in Indianapolis.
During their 68 years of marriage, Bruce and Anne traveled quite extensively throughout Europe and South America. Their son, Jim, joined them during their visits to London, Rio de Janeiro and Hawaii. A Christmas holiday was enjoyed in Rio de Janeiro. Their last visit abroad was spent in Hawaii, Peking, Hong Kong and Beijing. During this last visit, they realized a lifelong desire when they walked on the Great Wall of China.
In 1974,he retired from Allison and return to Lockhart with his wife, Anne, to the old family ranch, on land his great-grandfather, Dr. James Francis Powers, purchased from Byrd Lockhart in 1849. His sons will continue to operate the ranch.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lockhart.
Funeral services were held at McCurdy Funeral Home on May 5, 2008.
