Mildred C. Pettit

Born on a farm near Lytton Springs on April 23, 1917, Mildred Carter Pettit passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 19 in The Woodlands, Texas. She was 91.
Mildred and her identical twin sister, Marie, were among six girls born of Jewell Edith and Horace Brinkley Carter. Her parents were both lifelong residents and members of Caldwell County pioneer families. Mildred

and sister Marie spent their first three years of public school at Austin’s historic Palm School.
A teaching career as a classroom teacher, a home economics instructor, and a librarian spanned 40 years. Her teaching service took her from a one-room school at Rogers Ranch, south of Austin, to Mission, Texas, in the early 1940s, and then to Throckmorton, Texas, where she was the Home Demonstration Agent and met her future husband E. Wayne Pettit. The newlywed Pettits moved to Falfurrias, Texas, in 1947, where she later resumed her teaching career.
After graduating from then Lytton Springs High School, Mrs. Pettit attended Sul Ross State Teachers College in Alpine, where she graduated with a degree in home economics. Late in her career, she attended the University of Texas at Austin – along with sister, Marie – to complete her masters degree in library science.
In her late 60s and up into her 70s, she adventured to both Algeria, where she worked three years as a teacher, and to Denali National Park in Alaska, where she served several summers as a transportation supervisor.
Mrs. Pettit was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Mikel; former husband, E. Wayne; sisters: Marie Sneed, Yvonne Dalton and LaNier Gorum; and brother-in-law, John P. Gabriel.
She is survived by her son, Carter Wayne Pettit and his wife, Karen, of Graham, Texas, and their daughters, Brooke Adamick, of Willis, and Libby Pettit, of New York City; daughter, Mildred Marie “Missy” Daly, her husband, George, and sons Patrick Mikel and Sean Carter, all of The Woodlands; LaNelle Gabriel, formerly of Lockhart, and now residing in Dallas; and Blanche Carter of San Antonio. She is also survived by nieces: Mary Nell Gorom, of Honey Grove, Dr. John D. Gabriel of Fort Worth, and Jay Dalton, of Dripping Springs.
A small memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 10:30 a.m. for Ms. Pettit at her final resting place, the Bunton Cemetery near Dale.
