The Junior Varsity Lions came out swinging against the Austin Crocket Cougars at Lion Field on Thursday, Sept. 18, crushing the Cougars 42-28.
“The JV Lions improved to 4-0 on the season with a smash mouth victory over Crockett,” Coach Richard Mc Adams said. “Offensively, Nolan Lockhart led the way with close to 200-yar
ds rushing with help from Dylan Messerly, Guillermo Juarez and A.J. Green. This attack led to over 400-yards of rushing offense. Defensively, Brooks Pittman, Jonathan Alvarez and Tony Moreno had sacks as the defense only gave up six points in the second half. We travel to Gregory-Portland to improve our record to 5-0.”
The first quarter highlights began with a 22-yard completed pass from Alvarez to Messerly for a Lion first-and-10 at the 32 yard line with 8:15 on the clock. N. Lockhart made a 23-yard run for a first-and-goal at the 9-yard line. After a flag against the Lions for illegal procedure and a first-and-14 to go, N. Lockhart made a touchdown run with 6:52 remaining in the first for a 6-0 lead. Pittman’s kick failed.
With 3:47 on the clock, the Cougars answered with a touchdown of their own and a successful two-point conversion for a score of 6-8. The Cougars scored another touchdown at 3:21 ending the first at 6-14 with Crockett leading.
The second quarter went quickly with scoring from both sides. The Lions scored first to tie the game at 14. Another Lion touchdown with a bad kick took the score to 20-14. A third Lion touchdown with an unsuccessful two-point conversion attempt changed the score yet again to what seemed to be the final score of the quarter at 26-14, but the Cougars would not have it. Crockett scored a touchdown with 46 seconds left on the clock and then again with a successful two-point conversion at 36 seconds remaining in the second. The first half ended at 26-22.
The third quarter began with Crockett scoring first to take the lead. The Cougar touchdown was good for a 26-28 score. A two-point conversion attempt failed.
The Lions took over at their own 47-yard line. By 4:29, Messerly scored a touchdown and N. Lockhart rushed in for a good two-point conversion to regain the lead with a 34-28 score.
At 2:39, the Lions recovered a Cougar fumble and pushed the ball forward with first-and-10 gains until the third ended.
Fourth quarter action began at 7:24 in the period, with Pittman scoring the last touchdown of the game. A final two-point conversion ended the game at 42-28.
The JV Lions will travel to Gregory-Portland on Thursday, Sept. 25. Check next week’s Post-Register for highlights and scores.
