Freshmen Lions defeat Wildcats 13-6

The Freshmen Lions are 5-0 in the season after defeating the Gregory-Portland Wildcats 13-6 at Lion Field on Thursday, Sept. 25, ending their non-district play.

“The defense had another stellar performance,” assistant coach Jose Falcon said. “They have only given up 12 total points in five games. This game was all about

heart and who wanted the victory more.”

Both teams played strong defense and ran the ball, but it was the Lions who prevailed in the end. Linebackers Drake Hinojosa and Jordan Huckaby anchored the Lion defense.

The Wildcats scored first, but it was also the last touchdown they would put on the scoreboard. The extra point kick attempt failed for a score of 6-0.

The Lion defense made some adjustments after the Wildcats scored. The Lions’ efforts were successful and Ryan Reed intercepted a pass and returned it, untouched, for a 50-yard touchdown. After a successful kick the score went to 7-6, ending the first quarter.

The second quarter saw no scoring from either team, thanks to good defensive plays from both the Lions and the Wildcats.

The second half began at the Lockhart 33-yard line after D’Javonte Hedspeth returned the ball. The third remained scoreless until the last minute, when Hedspeth made a 66-yard touchdown with 30 seconds remaining. The third ended at 13-6.

The fourth quarter ended with a bit of controversy after an official missed an off sides call against the Lions with 2:27 remaining in the game. The Wildcats were forced to turn over possession of the ball, and the Lions ran the clock out for a 13-6 win.

“We are so proud of our athletes for all the hard work they have been doing on and off the field,” Falcon said.

The Lions will not be playing on Thursday or Friday this week. The next Freshman game will be their first district game of the season. They will travel to Del Valle to face the Cardinals on Thursday, Oct. 9. Games start at 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.
