Lady Lions advance to regional track and field championships

Four Lady Lions qualified for the Region III Championship meet during the District 17-4A meet last week. The qualifiers will travel to New Braunfels this Friday to compete in the Regional Qualifiers’ Meet, and then to Sam Houston State University on May 1 for the Regional Championships.

Thrower Gabby Galvan dominated

the competition in both the Discus and the Shot Put, earning district championships in both events and receiving a bid to the regional competition.

Galvan hit the mark of 36’09” in the shot and 131’08” in the discus. Throughout the season, Galvan has given strong performances in her field events, winning nearly every competition she has entered.

Jamiee Bennet, also a thrower, will join Galvan at the regional level, having earned silver in the Discus with a throw of 128’06”.

Distance runner Aly Gonzales qualified for regionals in two events, the 3,200-meter run and the 1,600-meter run.
Gonzales struck silver in the 3,200, finishing the course in 12:16. Her time of 5:41 in the 1,600-meter run was strong enough to earn her a bronze medal.

Sprinter Sacora Manning will round out the Lady Lions’ regional team. Manning earned second place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.3 seconds.
Several other Lady Lions participated in the meet, finally earning fifth place overall in District 17-4A with 66 team points.

Other Lady Lions participating were:
Cassie Arredondo – Pole Vault, fifth place;
Alissa Casteel – 3,200-meter run, fourth place;
Alysia Peralez – 1,600-meter run, fifth place;
Gonzales, Arredondo, Cassie Huckle and Samanta Cowan – 1,600-meter Relay, sixth place;
Jocelyn Coleman, Manning, Cassie Schroeder and Cowan – 400-meter Relay, fifth place; and
Coleman, Manning, Schroeder and Cowan – 4×200-meter Relay, sixth place.

The Lady Lions’ Junior Varsity team finished district competition in sixth place, earning 22 team points.

Participants were:
Bianca Juarez – 3,200-meter run, second place;

Jade Ramirez – 3,200-meter run, third place, 1,600-meter run, fourth place; and

Karsyn Stark – 3,200-meter run, fourth place.
