Prairie Lea Indians tied for second in District

The Prairie Lea Indians knocked off Pettus, 62-32, on the road on Friday to improve to 8-8 overall and 3-1 in District 30-A action.

In a 65-60 win over Nordheim, the Indians started off strong and took a 19-12 lead after the first quarter.

Nordheim fired back to cut the halftime deficit to 32-28. The Indians expanded the lead to 10 in the fourth quarter and kept Nordheim from getting within 5 points to finish the game. Senior point guard Alonzo Chapa led the team with 7 assists and, along with senior post Marcus Garcia, provided the leadership to win this crucial district game.

The Indians were led in scoring by sophomore DJ Cubit’s 28 points in addition to 11 rebounds. Sophomore Gabe Garcia was 3-of-7 beyond the three-point line and finished with 15 points. Sophomore Jimmy Soberanes finished with 8 points for the Indians.

The Prairie Lea Arrows and Indians resumed district play on Jan. 13 at Pettus. Prairie Lea visited Austwell-Tivoli on Tuesday and will return home on Jan. 20 when it welcomes Waelder to town.

Zapata lifts Arrows past Nordheim

The Prairie Lea Arrows won another girls District 30-A varsity basketball game recently at home against the Nordheim Lady Pirates, 47-14. The Arrows are now 2-2 in district play and are tied for 4th place.

The game was never in question as Coach Lindsey Demetriou’s squad started out on a big run and finished the first half with a 29-4 lead.

Maegan Zapata, a junior, led all scoring with 26 points on the night. Junior Keyanna Reed scored 15 points, while Daniela Sanchez added 4 and Kayle Molina 2 for the Arrows.
