Prairie Lea impresses coach despite loss

Prairie Lea football coach Steven Brown knew facing off against Medina, particularly on the Bobcats’ home field last week, would be a tough chore. However, even in a lopsided final score – Medina won, 58-13 – Brown said he was extremely proud of his Indians.

“Medina is considered in the premier program of our district,” Brown said. “Last year, they went 11-1. Our mission this year was to go over there and not get anyone injured.”

Instead, Prairie Lea found itself leading 7-6 after Lane Ficus scored on a 14-yard run and Gabriel Garcia added the extra point run.

It was still a relatively close game midway through the second quarter with Medina leading 16-7, but an interception led to a Medina score and by half the Bobcats were rolling 48-13.

“We need to win Friday night,” Brown said, noting that McDade comes to Prairie Lea sporting a 2-5 overall mark and is 0-2 in the district. Win Friday night is all we can do.”

Brown said coaches are trying to get it changed that only the top two teams from the district qualify for the state playoffs.

“At least have three need to make it,” Brown said. 

Brown said Jayden Zapata had a great game defensively for Prairie Lea, including ripping the ball from a Medina receiver’s hands and returning it for a touchdown.

Jimmy Saberones had a 9-yard touchdown run for Prairie Lead. Fiscus finished with 7 carries for 27 yards. Edwin Canepa had a 13-yard run, and Saberones caught two passes for 72 yards. Gabriel Garcia was 6-of-8 through the air for 75 yards. 

Friday will be Pink Out Night at Prairie Lee. The Indians players are wearing pink socks all month in support of breast cancer awareness.
