PFLUGERVILLE — As strong as Lockhart felt about matters after its season-opening district victory, the Lions were flat Friday night at Pflugerville Hendrickson, falling to the Hawks at Pfield, 35-11.

Lockhart will now likely need to win at least half of its remaining 6 district games in order to make the postseason.

The loss was only part of the story as Lockhart was outgained 337 to 132 in yards and the Lions managed only 9 first downs.

Lockhart returns home this week for Homecoming at Lions Stadium with winless Cedar Creek visiting. That will be followed with a visit to Hays in Buda on Oct. 4.

Hendrickson scored on its first two positions for what proved to be enough for the Hawks.

Lockhart appeared to make the Hawks go three-and-out on their first series, but a fake punt from their own 32-yard line resulted in an 11-yard gain and a new set of downs. Hendrickson capped off its 9-play, 76-yard drive when Pete Vallejo, Jr., connected with Romelo Boykin on a 20-yard touchdown pass with 6:47 left in the first quarter. Edward Tydings booted the PAT for 7-0 Hendrickson lead.

A short pass from Vallejo to Travor Morgan resulted in a 52-yard touchdown for the Hawks with 40 seconds left in the opening frame. Following a bad snap and failed PAT, Hendrickson led 13-0.

Lockhart got on the board with a nine-play drive resulting in a 25-yard Evan Estrada field goal with 7:52 left in the second quarter to cut its deficit to 13-3.

The Hawks managed to score 12 points on three occasions in the final 2:58 of the half.

First, Hendrickson’s Vellego scored on a one-yard keeper, followed by a Tydings PAT to make it 20-0 with 2:587 left in the half.

Facing a 4th-and-22 at its own 5, Lockhart snapped the ball on a punt attempt out of the back of the end zone for a safety, making it 22-3.

The Hawks then drove for a 32-yard field goal by Tydings on the final play of the half and a 25-3 lead.

Hendrickson added to its lead after Brody Martinka blocked and recovered a punt. Two plays later, Artis Duncan scooted in from 20-yards out. Tydings’ PAT made it 35-3 with 6:15 left in the third quarter.

Lockhart found pay dirt with 7:37 left in the game when Nathan Roland fought off several would-be tacklers and scored on a 12-yard run. Roland also ran in the two-pointer for the final margin.

The Lions had originally scored on a 41-yard interception return by Dylan White, but the play was called back due to an early celebration flag before White crossed the goal line.
