Lockhart High School junior Ethan Herrera capped an exceptional cross-country season this fall, earning one of the top state finishes in program history and securing his place among the elite runners of LISD.
Herrera competed at the UIL 5A State Cross Country Championship in Round Rock in October, racing head-to-head against 151 of the top competitors in Texas. He placed 27th overall with a time of 16:09 on the 3.1-mile course, one of the strongest state performances by a Lockhart athlete in recent years.
Running with confidence from the gun, he attacked the race early, passing the first mile in a blistering 4:47, good for ninth place at that point. He continued to push through the second mile in 9:51, a personal best split that underscored his growth and competitive drive.
The state meet marked the culmination of a remarkable 2025 season. Earlier in October, Herrera became Lockhart’s first back-to-back District Champion since 2010–2011, winning the District 25-5A Varsity Boys 5K in 16:14. With that victory, he secured his place in school history as Lockhart’s 20th all-time district champion.
This year also marked Herrera’s third consecutive trip to the State Meet, an achievement that highlights both consistency and steady improvement. Each season, his times, rankings, and racing poise have taken significant steps forward.
LISD officials praised Herrera for his competitive success and for the dedication and work ethic. Accompanying him at the recognition ceremony were LISD Cross Country Coach Scott Hippensteel, LISD Athletic Director Mike Maldonado, and LHS Principal Michael Herbin.
