When people first see Gerardo Rodríguez’s artwork, they’re often drawn in by the bold colors, quirky characters, and playful expressions. But spend a little more time with his paintings, and you’ll discover that each one tells a story, one inspired by childhood imagination, music, Texas culture, and a desire to make people smile.
That storytelling style is exactly what Lockhart residents will soon experience when “Monsters & Cowboys” opens inside Wendy R. Gift Shop, located at 211 W. Market St. The exhibit will debut during downtown Lockhart’s First Friday celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. on July 3, and visitors can continue exploring the collection during regular business hours.
For Rodríguez, art has been a lifelong passion. “I’ve loved drawing since I was a kid,” he said. “Watching cartoons and learning how animated shows and movies were created inspired me to start drawing and creating my own characters.” His creative journey eventually took him to college, where he studied graphic design and film. Along the way, he also worked in photography before returning to what he loved most drawing and painting. “That journey helped shape the style I’m known for today,” Rodríguez said. “I began with big, black-and-white friendly monsters, and lately I’ve enjoyed painting cowboys and western themes. But my cowboys have monster-like horns and are a little unserious and sometimes funny.”
While he believes he could paint almost anything, Rodríguez says there will always be a bit of “monster” in his work. He sees endless possibilities for those characters, from paintings to future creative projects beyond the canvas. His inspiration comes from everyday life. “It can be the title of a song, color patterns, a good cup of coffee, or even a cool-looking plant,” he said. “Music is a big part of my creative process.”
Over the years, one of the most meaningful compliments he has received is hearing that his artwork reminds people of their childhood. “Art is about playing and having fun for me,” Rodríguez said. “I love that people reconnect with positive memories when they look at my work. I take the painting seriously, but I like the characters and stories to stay fun. I think that’s what draws people in.”
That playful spirit is exactly what visitors can expect when they walk into Monsters & Cowboys. “When you enter the space, each painting will invite you into its own little world,” he said. “I hope people leave smiling, inspired, and ready to come back to see what new monsters and cowboys have shown up next.” Although Rodríguez’s work has gained collectors across Texas, opening a permanent presence in Lockhart feels especially meaningful.
He’s been visiting the city for years while his partner, Carly, has taught yoga in Lockhart on and off since 2017. During those visits, he fell in love with the town’s welcoming atmosphere and historic downtown square. “I’ve participated in an art show and a market here previously, and it’s been inspiring to see a small town known for barbecue become an arts destination while still holding onto its historic character and charm,” Rodríguez said.
When a room was offered to him inside the shop on West Market Street, he didn’t hesitate. “We were thrilled for the opportunity to have a more official presence in town,” he said. “I’m honored to bring my monsters and cowboys into Lockhart’s creative mix and be part of what the community continues to build.”
Despite his growing popularity, Rodríguez doesn’t believe one painting defines who he is as an artist. “I think all my characters, colors, and styles tell that story together,” he said. “They’re playful, don’t take themselves too seriously, and are approachable by all types of people. That’s really what I want my art to be, fun, uplifting, and something that makes people smile.” That philosophy shines through every canvas he creates. Whether it’s a horned cowboy, a friendly monster, or an explosion of vibrant colors, Rodríguez hopes each piece brings a little joy into someone’s life.
As Lockhart’s creative community continues to grow alongside its reputation as the Barbecue Capital of Texas, Monsters & Cowboys promises to be another colorful addition to the downtown arts scene, one where imagination, nostalgia, and a touch of Texas charm come together under one roof.
