Only one potential candidate has stepped forward in an attempt to fill the city council seat vacated by last month’s resignation of Richard “Dick” Weiland.
Weiland, who has suffered ill health since his handy defeat of the competition for the District 3 seat last November, tendered his resignation eff
ective June 8, after missing several meetings. The council moved quickly to call a special election, which will be held on Sept. 8.
Two potentially interested candidates, Mary Kyle and Benny M. Hilburn, picked up candidate packets to file for the seat; only Hilburn returned his packet by the July 9 deadline.
According to the City’s elections official, Connie Rodriguez, potential write-in candidates still have until July 16 to file their intention to run on the ballot as a write-in. Should no candidate file, the council will then have the opportunity to cancel the election, declare Hilburn the “winner” and appoint him to the seat.
