Lion Cross Country takes second at Moulton
The Lockhart Boys Cross Country teams traveled to Moulton last weekend to run in the Moulton Invitational.
More than 30 high schools competed at the meet. The meet used a traditional format where 1A, 2A, and 3A schools ran in one division and 4A and 5A schools ran in another division. The majority of schools were in the smaller school division.
Luling High School ran in t
he large school division and despite being a 2A school, and dominated the large school race. Luling scored only 20 points to win the team championship. Lockhart scored 47 points to earn the runner-up title, while Cedar Creek came home in third place with 78 points.
Lockhart Senior Robert Uhr won the individual championship as he toured the 5,000-meter course in just 15:29. Uhr went out easy the first two miles of the race, before running a very strong third mile. With 400 meters to go, Uhr passed the number one runner from Luling to earn the gold medal.
Senior Nicholas Avey ran another strong race for the Lions, placing seventh overall in 16:28. Sophomore Sergio Moreno ran a personal best time of 17:32, placing 15th. Senior Joseph Hefner finished in 20th place with a time of 18:03, while senior Baris Field placed 21st in 18:09.
Also running varsity for the Lion harriers was sophomore Taylor Stephens, who placed 23rd in 18:16.
“Taylor ran almost six minutes faster than one year ago,” Coach Scott Hippensteel said. “His dedication has been amazing.”
Sophomore Billy Hernandez placed 26th in 18:19. Junior Erik Moreno finished in 36th with a time of 19:18, while freshman standout Martin Salinas finished in 49th with a time of 19:44.
The Lockhart Junior Varsity won the team championship.
Sabass Amaya led the way in 19:56. Amaya was followed Tyler Tamayo in 20:04, Marco Rodriquez in 20:06, Ryan Arms in 20:16, Robin Roundthwaite in 20:18 and Denver Carter in 22:18.
Other Lockhart runners who ran well included Sean Matias, Michael Roehr, Nicholas Weatherby, Daniel Mireles, Tyler Spillman, Scott West, Chris Roehr and Robert Masters.
The Lockhart Teams will be traveling to Austin this Saturday to run in the St. Andrews Invitational.
