Billy Gray Rector
Billy Gray Rector was born on Jan. 31, 1931, to Marvin Thomas Rector and Virginia Gray Rector in the house next door to the house where he died on Jan. 12, 2007 after a long, valiant battle with cancer.
Billy graduated from Lockhart High School in 1949 and joined the U.S. Army where he served in the Korean War. He received a Bronze Star, a Silver Star, as well as othe
r decorations during his service.
In 1957 he began a 29-year career with the U.S. Post Office in Lockhart as a substitute carrier. He retired in 1986 after serving 12 years as Postmaster.
During retirement Billy became more involved in a lifetime love, woodcarving. He was a member and past Director of the Texas Woodcarver”s Guild; and member of the Woodcarver”s Camping Club and the Central Texas Woodcarver”s Club. His woodcarvings and crosses can be found all over Texas and U.S. as well as many foreign countries.
Billy was preceded in death by his mother and father, and one sister, Genier “Sis” Cunningham. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Bettie Lou Dickens Rector of Lockhart; two children: James Thomas Rector and wife Debra of Clyde, Texas, and Carol Lynn Rector of Lockhart; three grandsons: John Edward Shugart, Jason Eugene Shugart, and Trenton Gray Rector; three-great grandsons; one brother: Joe Marvin Rector; and many nieces, nephews, and other family members.
Family visitation was held at McCurdy”s Funeral Home in Lockhart, Monday, Jan. 15 from 6 – 8 p.m. Funeral services were held at First United Methodist Church in Lockhart, Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. Burial followed in Lockhart City Cemetery.
The family would like to express their appreciation and heart felt thanks to all of Billy”s doctors, support staff, and the wonderful, loving and caring staff of Hospice Austin who allowed Billy to pass peacefully and with dignity.
