The Texas Department of State Health Services recently honored Jerome Whitmore, of the Lockhart Police Department Dispatch Division for his Dispatcher Excellence Award at its annual Texas EMS Conference in Fort Worth.

Wymore was the first dispatcher to answer a 9-1-1 call reporting the school bus crash that occurred in March earlier this year along the Bastrop County and Caldwell County line.

Wymore stayed calm and collected, while assessing the situation and gathering critical information to pass on to first responders, which was instrumental in saving lives. His compassion and professionalism earned him the honor.

Awards were handed out to individuals, teams and facilities in the emergency medical services profession that demonstrated exemplary service to their local communities and the profession in 2024.

“Those recognized at this year’s awards ceremony have made significant impacts on our EMS operations,” said Dr. Timothy Stevenson, DSHS Deputy Commissioner for Consumer Protection. “These award winners exemplify true professionalism and excellence, which so many of our EMS professionals demonstrate every day. Texas is fortunate they are safeguarding our state and communities within our EMS/Trauma System.”
