Former City Manager dies at 73
Joe A. Michie
Joe A. Michie, 73, of Lockhart, Texas, died Jan. 28, 2009. He graduated from the University of Arizona, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity and a member of the Inter-Fraternity Council; and from San Diego State University, receiving a Masters in Public Administration. He married his high school sweetheart, Juliana Hawkins, the day he was r
eleased from his tour of duty in the U.S. Army, on Sept. 5, l960.
Joe’s first and last City Manager position was in Lockhart. His part in the beautification of the Courthouse Square was one of his proudest accomplishments. Joe also served the cities of Mineral Wells, New Braunfels , and Poplar Bluff, Mo. as City Manager; and Alvin , Smithville, and Bastrop as Interim Manager. His career included eight years in the Community Development Department of Charlotte, N.C., and service with the City of Little Rock, Ark., and the Texas Municipal League. Joe was also a member of the Kiwanis Club, the International City Managers Association and the Lockhart Chamber of Commerce.
Joe loved his family, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, the Boy Scouts of America (he was an Eagle Scout), and all things automotive. Remembered for his kindness, generosity and humor, Joe leaves behind a loving family and many, many friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joe B. Michie.
He is survived by his mother, Christine Gallaher Michie, of Lockhart; his wife of 48 years, Juliana; sons: Dr. Joseph Allen Michie, of Lockhart, and wife, Dr. Stacey Cone, and Reverend Michael Williams Michie and wife, Laurie, of McKinney, Texas; daughters: Anna Melinda Brock and husband, Larry, of Matthews, N.C., and Christine Harriett Zelazny and husband, Chet, of Eagleville, Tenn. He is also survived by grandchildren: Sarah Brock, Rebecca Brock, Kellie Michie, Jennifer Michie, Mariana Michie, Raea Michie, Lorelei Michie, Noah Zelazny and Isabella Zelazny.
Visitation with the family was held at McCurdy Funeral Home on Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, from 6 – 8 p.m. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal with Father Tom Bruns as Priest and City Manager Vance Rodgers assisting, along with Nick Classen as piper. Burial followed at Lockhart City Cemetery. Honored to serve as pallbearers were: Judge Todd Blomerth, Raymond Deleon, Mark Hinnenkamp, Bernie Rangel, Ronnie Stephens, Daniel Torres, Larry Torres and Dr. Lew White. Honorary pall bearers were Joe Aquino, Donaly Brice, Judge Louis Cisneros, and Pat Kirksey.
The family wishes to thank the Lockhart EMS, the ICU A unit at Seton Hospital and everyone at Austin Critical Care Pulmonary for their expert care.
