Gonzala (Sara) Alvarez, 89, gracefully departed this world on January 30, 2024, surrounded by the warmth and love of her devoted family. Born on January 10, 1935, in Lockhart, Texas, to Santos and Genorima Martinez, Sara lived a life marked by love, devotion, and a profound connection to her family.
Sara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Domingo Alvarez, Sr.; daughters, Lucy Alvarez and Diana Salazar; great-grandson, Albert Anguiano; parents, Santos and Genorima Martinez; and son-in-law, David Esparza.
Sara is survived by her daughters, Maria Esparza, Jesusa Alvarez and husband Bobby; sons Sammy Alvarez and wife Herminia, Domingo Alvarez, Jr. and wife Belinda, Ricky Alvarez and wife Tina, daughter Sylvia Lerma and husband Raymundo, son Michael Alvarez; 23 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; sisters Nicolasa (Tita) Cervantes, Angie Hernandez, Mary Rodriguez, Alice Morales, Brenda Muñoz; and brother Vicente Martinez.
A devoted member of the church community at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Sara found great joy in serving as a Guadalupana for many years. Her passion for culinary delights was evident in the meals she lovingly prepared for her family and friends, who were always welcomed with open arms into her home. An avid supporter of the Dallas Cowboys, Sara cherished the time spent watching games with her loved ones.
Her family was the center of her universe, and she dedicated her life to their well-being, never wavering in her commitment to be by their side. Sara’s evenings were filled with the joy of playing Bingo and the simple pleasures of watching her favorite novelas. Her culinary prowess was renowned, and she took great pride in crafting the best tamales, creating lasting memories through shared meals.
Active pallbearers, Anthony Lerma, David Esparza, III, Domingo Alvarez, III, Joseph Vasquez, Sammy Alvarez, San Juan Salazar, and Michael Alvarez, Jr., will have the honor of carrying Sara to her final resting place. Honorary pallbearers, Adrian Esparza, Jacob Alvarez, and Christopher Salazar, will stand as a testament to the deep impact she had on their lives.
The Alvarez family will receive friends at DeLeon Funeral Home on Monday, February 5, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. A gathering will follow at 6:00 p.m. for the recitation of the holy rosary at 7:00 p.m. on the same day at St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church. The funeral mass, officiated by Father Ed Karasek, will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church. Sara will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery following the funeral mass.
