BUDA — A lack of an effective running game coupled with a plethora of penalties cost Lockhart against an old foe, resulting in a familiar outcome.

Hays ran its winning streak to 11 straight over the Lions with a 31-17 victory Friday night at Bob Shelton Stadium. It was the renewal of an old rivalry that had not been played since 2013.

Lockhart forced punts on Hays’ two possessions, but the first of three fumbles – two resulted in loss of possession – gave the Hawks the ball at the Lions’ 39. Two plays later the Hawks used a 29-yard pass from Tacoma Ames to Jayden Gingrow to open the scoring. Karson Kelnar’s PAT made it 7-0 with 25 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Hawks made it 14-0 with 9:25 left in the second period on Troy Wright’s 2-yard plunge, followed by Kelnar’s PAT. Two yards was all the Hawks had to go for the score as a high snap over the punter’s head set Hays up at the LHS 2 and a 36-yard loss by the Lions.

Lockhart got on the board wit 2:50 left in the half after a drive stalled at the Hays’ 3, resulting in Evan Estrada’s 20-yard field goal to make it 14-3.

The Hawks added a field goal of its own as time expired in the first half, a 40-yard field goal by Kelnar to make it 17-3.

The only score of the third quarter came with 1:55 left in the period following a 67-yard, 16-play drive that ended with workhorse Anthony Hernandez’s 5-yard run. Kelnar’s PAT made it 24-3.

The play of the night cam with 6:16 remaining in the fourth quarter when Lockhart quarterback Kadon Moebes passed deep down the middle to a sprinting Gage Deutsch. Despite having his jersey being pulled by a Hays player, Deutsch managed to catch the pass, break free and run to pay dirt for a 63-yard touchdown. Estrada’s PAT made it 24-10.

Lockhart’s Bob Estrada recovered the ensuing onsides kick, but the Lions stalled on downs at the Hays 13.

Hays put the game on ice with 2:44 remaining when Hernandez again broke free for a 40-yard run, followed by Kelnar’s PAT and a 31-10 advantage.

Lockhart had one final score with Moebes’ 2-yard touchdown run with 1:27 remaining. Estrada’s PAT left the final margin at 31-17.

Lockhart managed only 69 yards of rushing – thanks to the team’s loss of yardage on the high snap. Nathaniel Gonzales never found running room very well as he finished with 61 yards on 22 attempts.

Moebes completed 10-of-24 passes for 157 yards, including 6 receptions by Deutsch for 127 yards.

Hernandez paced Hays with 180 yards rushing on 24 carries. Ames was 11-of-13 through the air for 98 yards.
