The Varsity Lions played one of their first games of the season at home on Feb. 24, hosting Cedar Creek and earning a 2-1 home field victory.

Lockhart scored early in the first half, with nice play and finish from Victor Ramos as well another from Mario A. Gutierrez.

The Lions were also able to hold Cedar Creek scoreless in the second half.

Key contributions came from

Gutierrez and Caleb Peters.

On Feb. 28, the Lions fell hard to the Lehman Lobos, losing 4-1.

The Lions’ only score on the night came early in the first half, when M.A. Gutierrez hit a free kick that deflected into the back of the net for a goal.

“Lockhart was leading late in the first half when an inadvertent hand ball in the box created Lehman’s first goal,” Coach Joshua Johnson said. “Unfortunately, Lockhart gave up another goal just moments later which set the tone for the second half.”

Still, Johnson credited Mario Gutierrez, M.A. Gutierrez, Peters and Edwin Mena with strong play throughout the game.

“That was an important game that we all wish we had back,” he said. “There are still plenty of opportunities for us going forward. The guys are still in a great position to make playoffs.”

That standing got stronger on March 2, when the Lions defeated Giddings, 1-0.

The Lions’ defense not only shut Giddings out, but they limited their opponents to only eight attempted shots on the goal.

M.A. Gutierrez scored late in the second half, changing the entire tone of the game.

With the second round of district play underway, the Lions still have a long way to go, and a strong position in the playoff hunt, having scored a key victory on Tuesday evening over the Hays Rebels. Check next week’s Post-Register for details.
