Lady Lions clobber Clemens Buffaloes, 8-1
The Varsity Lady Lions softball team continued their winning ways last week, besting Clemens 8-1 on the road in a key district match-up.
Lockhart jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the first inning.
Mackinzee Griebel led off the game with a walk and quickly stole second base on the next pitch thrown. Short stop Chelsea Capello knocked a double off the outfield wall in lef
t-center to score Griebel from second. Mikaela Flores then drew the second walk of the inning on her first at bat. Capello and Flores advanced to third and second on a wild pitch, and Alicia Garcia grounded out to short, allowing Capello to score. Nicole Reyes and Katrina Mills also drew walks, loading the bases. Flores and Reyes would both score off of wild pitches that the catcher could not handle. Amanda Sigala hit an infield single and Gabby Ybarra drew a walk to load the bases. Mills would also score on a wild pitch. Griebel laced a single through the infield to score Sigala and Ybarra.
The Lady Lions added one more run in the third, with two outs thanks to another single by Griebel to center. Griebel was able to advance to second after the center fielder booted the ball off her leg. Zierra Gonzales would add a single of her own to left field to score Griebel from second. Clemens held Lockhart scoreless the rest of the game.
The Lady Lions were only able to produce two other hits through the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Flores got the win on the mound, striking out six while only allowing one hit. Lilly Dupert came into the game in relief during the sixth, and allowed one un-earned run from an error, while giving up two hits.
Garcia went 2-3 with one RBI, while Griebel was 2-3 and Gonzales was 2-4 with one RBI.
The Lady Lions opened the week tied for second place in the district, with a virtually-guaranteed bid to the playoffs. They hosted Hays on Tuesday and will face Canyon on Friday, before returning home for the final home game of the season, when they host Smithson Valley on Tuesday, April 17.
The Lady Lions will close out the regular season on the road next week when they travel to face the Lehman Lobos.
