COLLEGE STATION — Lockhart High School’s girls’ cross country team traveled to College Station for Texas A&M Invitational.
With the postponement of the Texas A&M Corpus Christi meet, the Lady Lions scrambled to find a replacement meet. They found one at the Texas A&M Collegiate/HS Invitational. In the Varsity division, the Lady Lions placed 53rd out of 70 teams entered, while in the JV division, the Lady Lions placed 25th out of 32 teams.
In Varsity competition, the Lions ran their second 5k of the season with sophomore Addison Harrod once again taking the reins. Harrod placed 392nd (24:33) out of over 500 participants entered.
Freshman Alicia Sanchez continues to improve and came in less than a min off of Harrod, finishing (419th/25:13) as Lockhart’s No. 2 runner with senior Beth Key (423rd/25:19) hot on her heels.
Lockhart’s 4th and 5th runners consisted of freshman Aliya Parra (464th/26:37) and freshman Sofia Rodriguez (468th/26:51).
Lockhart’s 6th and 7th pushers were freshman Pyper Bornemann (485th/28:35) and junior Clarissa Martinez-Olvera (490th/28:59). Rounding out the varsity squad were sophomores Dayana Delgado (493rd/29:31), Katherine Silva-Garcia (494th/29:34), Zoie Ledesma (495th/30:14), and Melanie Garcia (496th/30:58).
“We had some big positives out there,” said LHS Head Girls Coach Reuben Ortiz. “The places they got did not fully show how well some of them ran. Many of the top schools from Region IV, III, and II showed up here today. It was quite a race.”
In the Junior Varsity division, the Lions were led by freshman Allie Forester (18:14) over the 2-mile course and finished in 245th place out of the 300-plus runner entered. Freshman Corina Ramos (18:37) made the big move this week as Lockhart’s No. 2 runner in 252nd place. It was Ramos’s first race of the season. Freshman Marlie Stephens (254th/18:40) was just seconds behind Ramos.
The wave of Lions came in when freshman Hayden Niemann (280th/23:33), sophomore Alahni Herrera (281st/24:01), and freshman Abigayle Stewart (282nd/24:11) finished.
“This to me was a pretty tough race for our ladies,”Ortiz said. “This was the last race of the day and the heat was really starting to come out. It was technically a JV race, but many small schools and private schools put their varsity teams in JV since they compete in the 2-mile, not the 5k at state. It was the fastest JV race I have ever seen.”
On Saturday, the Lockhart Cross-Country team will travel to Gonzales for the Apache Invitational.
