Lady Lions fall short to Lady Cougars
The Lockhart Lady Lion basketball teams continue to struggle through an extremely difficult season. Once again, the Lady Lions were not able to overcome any of their usual game deficiencies. At the last contest against the Canyon Lady Cougars on Friday, Jan. 26, all three teams failed to rise up to their full potential. The freshmen team lost 48-23. The Junior Varsity team e
nded with a losing score of 54-21 and the Varsity team ended their game and the night with a 66-29 loss.
Varsity Lady Lions
The Varsity Lady Lions handed their home court advantage to the Lady Cougars from the very beginning of the game. The third quarter was the only quarter that had the Lady Lions scoring make the double digits with 10 points. The Lady Cougars outscored the Lady Lions in every quarter. The game ended with a final score of 66-29.
The first quarter was the toughest quarter for the Lady Lions. They scored a total of five points while Canyon started their first quarter with 21 points. The quarter ended with a score of 21-5. Scoring for the Lady Lions in the first came from Mariah Carter with a free throw and a two point shot and Desiree Roland with a two pointer.
The second quarter did not prove to be much better for the Lady Lions. They added six points to their game score while the Lady Cougars added 14. The score at the end of the first half was 35-11. Scoring for the Lady Lions were Adrian Carter, Shelby Henrichs and Chelsy Martinez with two points each.
The third quarter was the best quarter for the Lady Lions. They were able to score 10 points. Unfortunately, the Lady Cougars added 16 points to their game score. The quarter ended with a 51-21 score. Scoring for the Lady Lions in the third were Roland and M. Carter, each with a pair of two pointers and a free throw.
The fourth quarter ended with a final score of 66-29. Scoring for the Lions were A. Carter with a two pointer and a three pointer, M. Carter with a two pointer and Kariah Selby with a free throw. Junior Varsity
Lady Lions
The Junior Varsity Lady Lions did not do any better than they had in previous games. They were slow to start and then never quite warmed up throughout the entire game.
All four quarters had the scoring limited to single digits and a half the scoring came from one player, Teie Harris. The final score for the game was 54-21.
The first quarter was the worst quarter for the JV Lady Lions. They put four points on the scoreboard while the JV Lady Cougars clawed their way to a 13 point lead with 17 points on the board in the first quarter. Scoring for the Lions were Leslie Jacobs and Cortney Ferris each with a two point shot. The quarter ended with a 17-4 score.
The second quarter was inconsistent in that it was an evenly matched quarter with the Lions scoring six points and the Cougars scoring seven points. The sole person scoring for the Lady Lions was Harris, who contributed all six points with a two point shot and four free throws. The first half ended with a score of 24-10.
The second half of the game started with Canyon having their highest scoring quarter with 18 points and Lockhart adding only five points to their score. Scoring for the Lady Lions in the third quarter were Gabby Cox with a two point shot and Harris with three free throws. The score at the end of the third was left at 42-15.
The final quarter failed to yield more than six points for the Lady Lions while the Lady Cougars clawed another 12 points out of Lockhart. Scoring in the fourth quarter came from Harris with a two pointer and a free throw and Cox with a free throw. The game ended with a score of 54-21 and a more triumphant Canyon team.
Freshmen Lady Lions
The Freshmen Lady Lions also lost their game in the first two quarters. They were slow to start and late in getting motivated to play the game. The final score ended at 48-23.
The first quarter started with the Lady Cougars answering the Lady Lions” scoring by more than doubling their own score. The first quarter ended in a 16-7 score. Scoring for the freshmen team were Desirea Winn with a couple of two pointers, Amanda Alvarez with a two-pointer and Alisha Officer with a free throw.
The second quarter was scoreless for the Lady Lions. The Lady Cougars added another eight points to their score. The first half of the game ended with a score of 24-7.
The Lady Lions added eight points in the third quarter while the Lady Cougars added 13 points to their score. Scoring for Lady Lions in the third were Alvarez with a two pointer and a three pointer for a total of five points and Andrea McKinney with a three pointer. The third quarter ended with a score of 37-15.
The final quarter also netted eight points for the Lady Lions. Scoring in the fourth quarter for the Lions were Officer with a two pointer and a free throw, Winn and Jocelyn Coleman with a two pointer each and McKinney with a free throw. The game ended with a final score of 48-23.
