Lady Lions fall to Lady Bears
The Lady Lions” varsity basketball team took on the La Vernia Lady Bears in non-district action Tuesday, Dec. 6, at the Lions Den. The Lady Lions, hoping to use the momentum off of a two game win-streak, were poised and well-prepared for the match-up.
The opening quarter was well played for both teams as they executed their offense extremely well.
“We came out sh
arp and that is what we need to do,” said Head Coach Dave Johnston.
LaVernia led by one point, 12-11, ending the first quarter.
The second quarter began just as intense as the first. Lockhart continued to trade baskets with La Vernia.
“We continued to play hard and be patient,” Coach Johnston added. “Our guards, Venoris Carter, Adrian Carter, Christan Kelly and Cecilya Smith, did an excellent job.”
However, LaVernia would tighten down defensively and held the Lady Lions scoreless for a three-minute stretch. LaVernia led 28-17 going into the halftime break.
In the third quarter, Lockhart played the Lady Bears even in as each team scored eight points.
The fourth quarter began with Lockhart down 36-25. Lockhart began to get into foul trouble as several of the Lady Lions picked up their fourth fouls.
It would cost the Lady Lions as LaVernia would go six for nine at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
“LaVernia is an excellent free-throw shooting team and that is how they extended the lead,” Johnston said.
The Lady Lions would fall 50-34 to LaVernia.
“Our girls really played them tough. We executed our offense, we dove on the floor for loose basketballs… all those little things you like to see your team do,” said Coach Johnston. “We just didn”t get the win.”
