An experienced and talented Lady Lion varsity team took to the boards last week, stacking up impressive wins against Austin Lanier and St. Stephens Episcopal School before falling in a tight contest against the Canyon Lake Lady Hawks.
Lady Lions v. Lady Hawks
According to Coach Katina Flournoy-Walker, the Lady Lio
ns entered their first outing with the Lady Hawks with a fiery attitude after starting the season with two strong victories. Because it was their first meeting, she said, both teams played like they had something to prove.
“We were scoring both inside and outside the paint [in the first half],” Flournoy-Walker said. “Everything was going our way.”
In the second half, though, the Lady Hawks took control of their outside shots in the second half, and knocked down almost everything they put up.
Key shots from the outside gave the Lady Hawks the edge, which they were ultimately able to use to earn a 58-50 win over the Lady Lions.
Lady Lions v. St. Stephen’s
On Nov 14, the Lady Lions played faced the Lady Spartans and walked away with a 39-31 victory.
“The team is looking great,” Flournoy-Walker said after the victory, which followed a big 59-13 win over the Austin Lanier Lady Vikings during the season opener. “The ladies are working very hard every day and learning how to be a stronger team.”
Tori Hill led the way for the Lady Lions against St. Stephens, scoring 12 points and picking up nine rebound. Kariah Selby pulled down eight rebounds.
Hill, Selby, Desirea Winn, Andrea McKinney, Cassie Schroeder and Kaela Amirakbirian are returning to the varsity squad this year. Newcomers joining them on the court are Toiya Ghant, Shavonda Hill, Shelby Kennedy Samantha Duncan and Isis Johnson.
The Lady Lions will host the Travis Lady Rebels on Monday, Nov. 30, 2009. Tipoff is scheduled at 7 p.m.
