To the Editor:

Recent news reports on the looming budget showdown portrays the real risk of another government shutdown. On behalf of the compassionate caregivers at Seton Healthcare Family, I urge Congress to not only avoid another government shutdown, but to go a step further and protect hospitals and access to healthcare for all Americans.

We oppose any legisl

ation that reduces hospital funding or access to critical programs.

If federal budget cuts continue – since 2010, $121.9 billion in cuts to hospitals have been approved – it could hinder hospitals’ ability to meet patient needs.

Seton provides critical care; delivers babies; and treats emergency room visitors – 338,938 times in 2014 alone.  Last year, Seton, a member of Ascension, the nation’s largest Catholic and nonprofit health system, provided more than $481 million in uncompensated care to area residents and invested millions more to secure high-quality, person-centered and affordable care for all.

We ask that Congress not consider any legislation that would reduce funding for our hospitals or change benefits to critical programs. We urge Congress to protect access to the highest quality healthcare for all.
