Too many injured players, not enough depth in the team and countless careless mistakes set the Lions back 34-6 against the Mules at Alamo Heights on Friday night.
“I believe the defense played real well on the first half,” Lion Head Football Coach Paul Kilby said after another tough loss. “The offense just, ah… we
struggled… we struggled to move the ball and make first downs. We had a couple of critical turnovers. Some of them we actually got on, but they were huge losses.”
The game began with the Mules kicking to Lockhart. The Lions moved the ball rapidly down the field until they reached the 9-yard line with a couple of first-and-ten rushes by Chris Jackson and Dettrick Reed.
Lockhart scored first with a 5-yard touchdown run by Levi Mair at 6:47 during the first quarter. A two-point conversion attempt failed for a score of 6-0.
After that, it was all about the Mules, who answered with a touchdown of their own at 5:02. The play was called back and no score was recorded after the Mules received a holding penalty.
With four minutes remaining in the first, the Mules completed a pass on a fourth-and-8 play for a first-and-10 at the 2-yard line. The Mules scored their first touchdown by 3:31. The extra point kick was good and the quarter ended at 6-7.
The Mules scored their second touchdown of the night within the first minute of the second quarter. The extra point kick was good. No further scoring occurred in the first half and the Mules enjoyed a 6-14 lead as they took a halftime break.
The third and fourth quarters were brutal for the Lions. Alamo Heights scored their third touchdown with 9:35 remaining in the third. The extra point kick failed for a score of 6-20.
The Lions worked hard for every yard they earned. They made a tremendous effort on the field and reached the 13-yard line before squandering their hard earned turf with big mistakes.
The Mules took advantage of the Lions’ mistakes and moved the ball forward. With less than two minutes to go in the third, the Mules made a 70-yard run to the Lockhart 20-yard line. The play was followed by a first-and-ten at the 10 and then a touchdown with a third-and-one play with 21 seconds remaining. The extra point kick was good and the quarter ended at 6-27.
The last touchdown of the game was made by the Alamo Heights quarterback. The extra point kick was good for a final score of 6-34.
“It’s a struggle,” Kilby said. “It’s a little bit of a struggle for us, but we’re trying. We’re still trying to find consistency on offense and put a full game together on both sides of the ball.”
The Lions (2-3) will host the Schertz Clemens Buffaloes (3-1) at Lion Stadium on Friday, Sept. 30.
See you at the game.
