The Varsity Lions fell 17-7 after a hard-fought “Senior Night” game against the Austin Travis Rebels at Lion Stadium on Friday, Sept. 10.

The Lions scored the first touchdown of the game with 2:40 remaining in the first quarter. Joseph Bell ran in for the only Lion touchdown of the night and Brooks Pittman’s extra point

kick was good for a score of 7-0.

The Rebels took control the ball at the 33-yard line with 2:27 on the clock. They reached the four-yard line for a first and goal at 2:05. A bad first-down play landed the Rebels at the 12-yard line after a long backward scramble. After futile attempts to move the ball forward the Rebels decided to kick a field goal and scored ending the first quarter at 7-3.

The second quarter action did not begin until a Rebel punt was blocked by the Lions for a Lockhart first and ten at the Rebel 39-yard line at 9:40. Both teams took turns with the ball, but neither was able to score ending the first half of play at 7-3.

The game’s momentum shifted to the Rebels during the third quarter. Travis scored a touchdown and an extra point for a score of 7-10 at 8:18. No further scoring happened in the third despite efforts from both teams.

The fourth quarter began with the Rebels exploding onto the field and scoring another touchdown and extra point for a score of 17-7 with 11:46 remaining in the game.

Incomplete passes by the Lions turned the ball over to the Rebels who fumbled the ball on a first-and-ten for a Lion first down at the Rebel 46-yard line at 3:20.

By 3:02, the Lions were at the 41-yard line at third-and-six when the Rebels intercepted a pass and ran it all the way to the Lions’ 30. The Rebels took their time with each down, running the clock down to 32 seconds before calling a time out.

The Lions took over at their own 30, with 26 seconds left on the clock. They called a time out with three seconds remaining, and closed the game with a final score of 17-7.

With three losses behind them, the Lions are ranked last in the District 27-4A standings with Alamo Heights leading the teams with three wins and no losses, while Hays, Lehman, New Braunfels Canyon and Smithson Valley each share two wins and a loss. Schertz Clemens leads Lockhart with one win and two losses.

The Lions will face Dripping Springs in a Homecoming game at Lion Stadium on Friday,
Sept 17 starting at 7:30 p.m.
See you at the game.
