Lions easily repeat as Gonzales Invitational champions

The Lockhart Boys Cross Country team traveled to the Gonzales Invitational Saturday. The meet was held at the JB Wells County Park.
Lockhart, the defending champions, easily defended its title as the Lions won with a score of 30 points.
Lockhart’s top three runners all finished together, intentionally placing first, second, and third overall out of 69 runners competing in the Varsity Boys division.
Sophomores Ethan Herrera and Ivan Gonzales, along with freshman Irving Ferretiz, all completed the 3.1-mile (5,000-meter) course in an excellent time of 16 minutes and 53 seconds.

Junior Paul Munoz placed 9th overall with a time of 18:29. Sophomore Keaton Archer ran a strong race as he completed Lockhart’s top five finishers, placing 15th with a time of 18:51.

“I was very pleased to see our top five finishers all completing the race within two minutes of each other on Saturday,” said LHS Head Coach Scott Hippensteel.

Junior Connor Zea completed Lockhart’s varsity squad as he finished in 17th place with a time of 18:56.

In the team standings for Varsity, Lockhart captured the win with 30 points, Gonzales finished second with 68 points, followed by Devine at 70. Vanderbilt Industrial finished fourth with 90, San Antonio Home School placed fifth with 119, Waelder was sixth with 173, Shiner St. Paul placed seventh with 179, and Moulton finished in eighth place with 192 points.

The Lockhart Junior Varsity defeated Devine HS to win the team title with just 25 points to 35 for Devine.

Sophomore Jaiden Slussler led the JV as he was third out of 30 runners, competing with a time of 20 minutes and 9 seconds.

Other Lions who ran on JV included Jace Ramsey, who placed 4th overall in 20:35, sophomore Antonio Rico, who placed fifth with a time of 20:45, senior Andrew Conoche, who placed 6th with a time of 20:52, junior Hayden Brast, who placed 7th with a time of 21:12, freshman Josiah Lopez, who placed 8th with a time of 21:25, junior Ethan Gamez, who placed 10th with a time of 22:17, freshman James Peterson, who placed 22nd overall with a time of 23:50, freshman Max Adams, who placed 23rd in 24:17, and freshman Liam Moctezuma, who placed 25th with a time of 24:20.
