The Varsity Lion baseball team started their week out on a high note after beating the defending State Champions, New Braunfels Unicorns with a well-earned final score of 5-4 at Lion Field on Tuesday, April 24. The win’s momentum carried the Lions to their Friday, April 27 game against the Del Valle Cardinals and onto yet another
crucial win. The Lions beat the Cardinals 8-5 and finished their season fourth place in the district with a 7-7 record and 14-13 overall.
The Lions battled the Unicorns over each of the eight innings until the winning run by Michael Schulle who made it to home plate with the help of Marcus Officer. “Marcus Officers’ fielders choice in the bottom of the eighth scored Schulle from third to win the game. This was big to beat the defending State Champs,” said Head Coach Mark Elder.
Landon Buckner went 2-3 with doubles and Schulle had twelve strikeouts pitching all eight innings.
After the game the Lions gathered in the outfield for the usual post game talks, only this time it was special. “I can’t tell you how proud I am of each of you. You guys have beaten the number one ranked team in our district. This win means a whole lot. This win says a lot about what kind of team you have become,” said Elder as he praised his team. “I am very proud of the entire team for your commitment and dedication this year.” Elder went on and talked about the season and the games, but it was evident that he was touched by the win and the athletes in front of him. And yes, the moment was special.
The Lions kept confident throughout the entire week and made it to Del Valle with a winning attitude. It paid off big and the seniors went out on a great note. A. J. Crider pitched six innings with nine strikeouts earning his first district win. Dennis Ortiz went 2-3 with a double. Josh Hazelett had a double. Schulle came in to record the last out of the game with a strikeout. “These guys did a great job this year. With this win we finished fourth in district with a record of 7-7 and overall 14-13. I am very proud of all these guys.” Said Elder. Congratulations to the Lion Varsity team for a great season. It was certainly fun taking pictures from the dugout. I want to thank Coach Elder for getting the stats and highlights to me after the games. See you at…next year’s games.
