Montray Mathews
Ms. Montray Mathews, 105, departed this life on Saturday, April 21, 2007 at 10:16 a.m. A domestic engineer and owner of a cafe, she was born in Lockhart, Texas to Solomon and Virginai Brawley on Jan. 9, 1902.
Montray was a very faithful member of the church, uniting in 1928 under pastorage of the late Rev. H.C. Cashaw and serving faithfully under the leadership of the
late Rev. Albert A. Lucas, Rev. Crawford W. Kimble and currently under Pastor O.Z. Cofield. She served as a dutiful member with regular attendance at church and church-related activities, as well as lending her support for the ongoing of the Kingdom. She was an active member of Senior Mission I, Sunday School, BTU and the choir.
She was first married to Allen Jones, and to this union a daughter, the late Allie Mae Jones was born. Later, Montray married her loving husband Aubry Mathews, to whom she was married for 57 years before he preceded her in death on April 23, 2005.
Montray leaves to cherish her memory her daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn and Stanley Chambers; loving nieces Ethelene Johnson, Claudie Coe, Lorene Campbell and Annnis Brawley; nephews Henry Brawley, Billy Brawley, Clinton Brawley, Farris Brawley, Clarence Brawley and William Brawley; sister-in-law Verna Mae Jones; and five generations of nieces and nephews.
She also leaves behind devoted caregivers Virginia “Jean” Flakes of Houston; Ruby Chambers of Dallas; Linda Webster of Dallas; Shantia Domino of Dallas; DeShanna Ferguson of Dallas; and a host of others who took the time to care for her.
Private family services in honor of Montray were held before her burial.
