Odus “Dutch” Owen, Jr.
Odus “Dutch” Owen, Jr., of McMahan, passed away on June 3, 2009. He was nearly 86 years old. He was born July 24, 1923, in McMahan. He was the youngest son of Odus and Mary Elizabeth Owen.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Judson Owen.
He is survived by two brothers, Leland Owen, of Lockhart, and Curtis K. Owen and wife, Edith, of McM
ahan; four nieces: Jolene Crozier, of Austin, Louise Lightsey and husband, Jerry, of Austin, Diane Ross and husband, Donald, of Texarkana, and Beverly Coates and husband, Bruce, of McMahan; and nephew, Tom Owen and wife, Mary Ann, of McMahan; as well as numerous great-nieces and nephews.
Dutch is also survived by numerous friends in Caldwell County and surrounding areas. He never met a stranger, and was quick to make friends. Dutch attended Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in McMahan, and was a supporter for many years.
Dutch’s occupation was a rancher and farmer. One of his great loves was in horses, and riding them in the Lockhart and Luling parades. Dutch looked forward to the Owen-Handley reunion in Doss, Texas, in August of every year, and will be missed by many there.
Where Dutch Owen met most of his friends was in service to the McMahan Volunteer Fire Department. He was a charter member and was a mainstay in selling Bar-B-Que tickets every year for the annual fundraiser. His latest effort was planning to purchase a commercial refrigerator for the new fire hall.
Funeral services were held on June 6, 2009, at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in McMahan, with burial at Jeffrey Cemetery. Elders Bill “Sonny” Huckaby, Bill Walden and Billy Moseley officiated.
Serving as pallbearers were: Bradley Baethge, Michael Baethge, Jeb Owen, Chuck Cutshall, Ted Randle, and Byron Hooper.
The family requests memorials in Dutch’s honor be made to McMahan Volunteer Fire Department, 291 Whizzerville Road, Dale, Texas 78616.
