Prairie Lea has multiple Regional Meet qualifiers

Prairie Lea competed in its high school and junior high district track meets last week at Runge and the Area meet held Monday in Fayetteville.

Prairie Lea Athletic Director Jess Stephens said his junior high boys placed third.

Stephens also said Ahjanni James-Smith, Malaki Deleon, and Emmanuel Sanchez each improved on their times that have them at the top of the state for 1A 7th graders.

Deleon, a 7th grader, won both the 200- and 400-meters.

Sanchez , also a 7th grader, won the 1600-meters and was runner-up in the 800-meters.

Seventh-grader Lonnie Smith was 5th in the 200-meters, while classmate Jose Rocha was 8th in the discus.

Also, the 4×400 relay team of Lonnie Smith, Deleon, Valdo Castillo, and Reyes placed third.

The Indians’ 4×100 relay teams of Lonnie Smith, Sinahi Reyes, Jensen Smith, and Jaiden Zapata was second.

Ahjanni James-Smith (7th grade) won the 400-meters and was runner-up in both te 200- and 200-meters.

Eighth-grader Zapata was 7th in the 100-meters, while Leah Callaway was 9th in the 400-meters.

Kimberly Angeles (8th grad) was second in the shot put and third in the discus.

Prairie Lea High School had multiple qualifiers for the Area Meet:

Junior Edwin Canepa, 2nd 800-meters

Junior Clifford Bell, 3rd 110-meter hurdles, 4th 300-meter hurdles

Freshman Kendall Nielsen, 2nd 300-meter hurdles, 3rd 100-meter hurdles

Senior Kayle Molina, 4th 1600-Meters

The PLHS 4×100 relay team of Lane Fiscus, Joe Zapata, Jimmy Soberanes, and Gilberto Garcia was third.

The Indians’ 4×400 relay team of Fiscus, Zapata, Gabriel Garcia, and Canepa was third.

Prairie Lea non-Area qualifiers included:

Senior Daniela Sanchez-, 5th in discus;

Freshmen Kendall Nielsen, 6th in 200-meters;

Junior Gabriel Garcia, 5th in 800-meters and 6th in 200-meters;

Junior Lane Fiscus, 5th long jump, 6th in 400-meters;

Freshman Peter Duron, 5th in 400-meters, 7th in 1600-meters;

Freshman Raudel Orozco, 6th in 800-meters, 6th in 1600-meters;

Junior Jimmy Soberanes, 6th in 100-meters;

Sophomore Cass Cunningham, 6th in shot put.

Regional Qualifiers

Junior Edwin Canepa qualified in two events with a 4th place finish in the 800-meters and a 4th place finish in the 4×400 relay.

Junior Clifford Bell qualified in two events with a 4th place finish in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles.

Freshman Kendall Nielsen qualified in two events with a 3rd place finish in the 300-meter hurdles and a 4th place finish in the 100-meter hurdles.

Junior Lane Fiscus, junior Gabriel Garcia, and freshman Peter Duron joined Canepa on the 4×400-meter relay team that qualified for regionals.

The Region IV-1A track meet will be held April 19 and 20 at the Seguin High School track.
