Softball league provides family fun

The Lockhart Community Recreational Center (LCRC) offers a drug-free co-ed softball league for ages 12 through adults every Thursday evening at the City Park.
Currently, the softball spring league is playing giving the community a fun-loving competitive activity for the whole family.

ockhart Community Recreational Center has taught him a lot of discipline with the sport activities,” said Summer Ramirez, mother of two children.
“It really is a family affair for us,” said Ulonda Allen, a Distiller teammate in the spring league. “I have raised my kids playing in this league, and we still play together with them being full-grown.”
An end-of-season party is held for the players and volunteers where awards are given to the top teams. The league averages six to 12 teams per season depending on the time of year with the largest being in the spring and summer months.
The softball league was started over thirty years ago with Lee Eckford presently supervising through the LCRC.
“The softball league, historically was started more than thirty years ago by my father and several other interested members of the community. I have supervised it for the past eleven years,” said Eckford, director of LCRC.
“This not only fills a need recreationally but also improves the participant both athletically and socially by providing a safe environment in which cooperation engenders achievement and a sense of civic pride,” she added.
The LCRC depends upon the help of volunteers to keep the league running proficiently. Volunteers help with officiating, scorekeeping, organizing the end-of-season party, and cheering on the players on the field.
The softball league is a year-round program consisting of several seasons, starting with the spring league and progressing in ten-to-twelve week intervals to summer, fall and winter leagues. The winter league is, however, completely dependent upon the current weather conditions.
