LA VERNIA – Lockhart’s Maroon 8th graders (A Team) avenged an earlier loss at la Vernia to claim the district championship, 28-24, as the Lions held on after opening a three-score third quarter advantage.
Coach Brandon Jenkins’ Lions held a 13-0 lead at the half and scored early in the third period to take a 21-0 advantage.
La Vernia fought back and made enough plays to make the final score close.
LJHS quarterback Demonte Anthony had a big game with 3 touchdowns. Running back Denim Ford had more than 100 yards rushing. Outside linebacker Joel Garcia had a crucial sack to seal the game for Lockhart.
“It was an honor getting to work with this group and our coaching staff,” 8th Grade Coach Brandon Jenkins said. “We had a very talented and hard-working group. They took their one and only loss at home against La Vernia (19-18) during district play. After that loss, they were able to set a goal to win out and play them again for the championship. They worked hard for 3 weeks straight. They won out the rest of the season and were able to win the district championship.
“It was a great season and I look forward to seeing what this group can accomplish in the future.”
