Anita Visage Atkison

Daughter. Sister. Aunt. Wife. Sister-in-law. Friend. College graduate. Teacher. Businesswoman. Political activist. UT Longhorn fan. Collector of clowns. Christian. Republican. Patriot. Texas woman. Born on Nov. 17, 1921, Samuel Buchanan and Ida Lea Visage in Longview, Texas, Anita (Visage) Atkison slipped peacefully into the next world on March 27, 2010.

Often seeming the perfect mix of sweet and sassy, she epitomized Southern women of her generation who valued family and marriage above all. But she also stepped outside the box of that generation, earning a college degree, running a business for 52 years and actively involving herself in politics.

Her loyalty to family made her cherished and loved by us all. She could recount her entire inventory from memory. She was outspoken and forthright. She had a great sense of humor. After family, she loved this state, this country, the political process and the Texas Longhorns. She made a good ham and great pot roast. Her needlework made her mother proud.

Anita was pre-deceased by her husband, Joe A. Atkison, Jr.; her brothers, Samuel Jackson Visage and Billy Fuller Visage; her half-brothers, Zelwood Z. Denson and Idus O. Denson, and her parents. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews and their children to honor her legacy.

Visitation was scheduled to be held on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, from 6 – 8 p.m. at McCurdy Funeral Home. A funeral service was planned on Thursday, April 1, 2010, at 10 a.m., also at McCurdy Funeral Home, with a graveside service following at 3 p.m. at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery.

Contributions to CTMC Hospice San Marcos or the American Lung Association would honor Anita”s memory.
