William James “Bunny” Powell

In Loving Memory of William James “Bunny” Powell
William (Bill) James Powell, affectionately known to family and friends as “Bunny,” passed away peacefully on December 6, 2025, at the age of 90, surrounded by his loved ones in Georgetown, TX.
Born in Lockhart, TX on October 5, 1935, William lived a life defined by kindness, hard work, dedication, and deep devotion to those he cherished. He was a man of quiet strength, gentle humor, and a touch of stubbornness. The story goes he was nicknamed “Bunny” by his mother, Wanda Lee, or his grandmother, Hattie Bluhm, for his cotton-top hair—a name that reflected the warmth and affection he inspired in everyone around him.
As a young boy growing up in Lockhart, “Bunny” worked at Black’s Barbecue and also alongside his grandfather and hero, William G. Bluhm at the original Kreuz Market. Those formative days shaped his work ethic and his love for community. He later served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany during the Korean War era. Upon discharge, he moved to Houston where he met the “love of his life” and began his career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company (later SBC/AT&T), working faithfully as a dedicated telephone man for 34 years.
William was deeply committed to his family, always there for milestones both big and small. His legacy of love, guidance, and devotion will continue to live on through the generations.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Frances Harvie Powell; four daughters, Linda Scardis (Ray) of Keller, TX, Annette Thurmond (Ned) of Georgetown, TX, Carol Lea Grogan (John) of Denton, TX, and Laura Spradlin (Mark) of Georgetown, TX; granddaughter Alecia Ridder (Nick) of Southlake; grandson Patrick Grogan (Rachel) of Caddo Mills; and four great-grandchildren, Kate, Luke, Brooke, and Layne Ridder of Southlake. Also, survived by his sisters Kay Teaff, Jo Nell Miears, Sandra Aiken, brother, Jackie “Jack” Powell, and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents, Smith Roland Powell, and Wanda Powell (whom he lovingly called “a true angel”), sister June Page, grandson Ryan Hess, and great-granddaughter Scottlyn Rose Grogan.
A memorial mass will be on January 23,2026, 9:30 a.m. at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Georgetown, TX, Burial will follow at 11 a.m. on January 24, 2026, at Lockhart Cemetery, with an intimate Celebration of Life afterward where family and friends will gather to honor and remember him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Tunnel to Towers or Disabled Veterans.
Though his temper and stubborn streak were legendary, they were always tempered by a deep kindness that left a lasting impression. William “Bunny” Powell’s memory and legacy will live on in the laughter he shared, the wisdom he imparted, and the love he gave so freely to his family.
