Freshman place third in tourney

This past weekend the freshman baseball team had a tournament in San Marcos. There were seven other teams in the tournament. The tournament was pool play and Lockhart was in the same pool as Pflugerville, Wimberley, and Seguin. They lost their first game to Pflugerville by one run 8-7. Michael Schulle pitched a complete game. After having a rough first inning he settled down

to only allow three runs in the following four innings. The team put forth a great last inning effort scoring four runs, but could not quite pull out that last run needed to tie up the game. In their second game against Wimberley the team played well. This too was a one run ball game with Lockhart ending up on top (7-6). Michael Rodriguez was the starting pitcher and went a solid three innings before running into some trouble in the fourth. Dennis Ortiz relieved Rodriguez and shut Wimberley down. Ortiz and Josh Hazelett led the Lions offensively. In their third and final game of pool play the Lions lost a heartbreaker to Seguin (8-7). The Lions starting pitcher was injured in the first inning and Josh Hazelett came in to pickup the slack. He pitched four solid innings. In the last inning Dennis Ortiz was again called upon to shut the door for the Lions with bases loaded and no outs. The lions however were unable to finish the job as Seguin scored on a wild pitch to win the game. Due to the tie breaker rules in the tournament Lockhart still had the chance to place third. They played Taylor Saturday afternoon. The Lions played great baseball this afternoon. Brandon Hodges started the game and Dustin Garza was called on for relief. Combined they allowed only two runs behind a great defensive effort. Hodges after being relieved was moved to centerfield where he made two great catches to keep the Ducks from having a big inning. Offensively the Lions hit the ball well and came through in clutch situations with runners on base to beat Taylor 8-2 and take third place in the tournament. Coach Murby was pleased with the boys” effort and is looking forward to a great season ahead.
