Lions find tough competition with Yoakum

Varsity vs. Yoakum
The Lockhart Lions” varsity basketball team hosted the Yoakum Bulldogs last Tuesday, Dec. 6, in the Lions” Den after losing to them last year.
The Lions fought hard on the court, but their efforts came up short in a close scoring game, 69-65.
The Bulldogs grabbed the lead in the first quarter,
29-14, as the Lions struggled offensively to keep up with the skilled Yoakum team.
In the second quarter, the Lions found their momentum by outscoring the Bulldogs 20-10. Their scoring drive lessened the lead Yoakum obtained, 39-34, at the halftime break.
The Lions returned from the locker room fired up with a winning drive. They outscored the Bulldogs again in the third quarter, 17-15, to give Yoakum only a 3-point lead going into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was the Bulldogs breaking quarter to win the game. Their tight defense only allowed the Lions to score 14 points as they added 15 points to their scoreboard. The Lions suffered from a 4-point deficit to lose the home game, 69-65.
The Lions high scorers were Michael Black with 14 points including two 3-point shots, and Terrance Waldon with 13 points including one 3-point shot.

Lockhart Lions” junior varsity basketball team defeated the undefeated Yoakum Bulldogs, 5-0, to give them their first loss of the season.
In a high scoring game the Lions top the Bulldogs 60-57 on the scoreboard. After one period of play the Bulldogs led 15-13 as Jonathon Gonzales paving the way with four points during the first period.
During the second period the Lions roared back scoring 19 points to take a halftime lead 32-30. Again, Gonzales led the quarter with seven points.
The third period belonged to Yoakum as they scored 18 points to take a lead of 48-43 into the fourth period.
The Lions were determined to win as they outscored the Bulldogs 17-9 to give the Bulldogs their first loss of the season.
Leading scorers for the Lions were Jonathon Gonzales with 23 points, Jeremiah Johnson with 15 points, and Jeremy Hill with nine points.
