Carl C. Wright
Carl C. Wright, 97, passed away on Jan. 9, 2008, in the Golden Age Home, in Lockhart.
He was born to John Wesley and Pearl Hasty Wright in Travis County on Jan. 18, 1910. He graduated valedictorian from Lytton Springs High School in Caldwell County and completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at Southwest Texas State Teachers College (now Texas State) in San Marcos, Texas
.
He married Gertrude Renker in 1932, and held positions as teacher, principal, and superintendent of schools in Bastrop and Guadalupe Counties in the 1920s, 30s and 40s. In the mid-40s, he received his Master of Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin and began teaching there. In 1951 he accepted a position in the English Department of Pan American College (now UT Pan American) in Edinburg, Texas, where he taught until his retirement.
He enjoyed gardening, painting and playing the violin. He continued to publish as a freelance writer until shortly before his death.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 73 years, Gertrude; grandson, Kenneth James Tomlin; brothers, Elmo and Walter Wright; and sisters, Ann Woodall and Allene Law.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carlene and Henry Tomlin of Bastrop; son and daughter-in-law Phillip and Wanda Wright of Bella Vista, Ark.; grandchildren JoDee and husband Gary Myatt of Austin, Loma and husband Dan Davidsmeyer of San Antonio, Larry Wright of Portland, Ore.; and great-grandchildren, Carl Tomlin, Brady and AJ Myatt and Kendall and Brandi Merryman. Visitation was held at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, at McCurdy Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, 2008 at McCurdy Funeral Home in Lockhart, with Reverend Robert Hahn officiating.
Interment followed at Lytton Springs Cemetery.
