Nothing says “springtime in Central Texas” quite like the sounds of children’s laughter and the smells of outdoor cooking. This weekend, Lockhart City Park will be full of both.
On Saturday, March 20, the City of Lockhart and the Plum Creek Casters will host the annual Lockhart Kidfish event at the City Park Pond,
while the City of Lockhart, the Lockhart Chamber of Commerce and the Central Texas Tolbert Chili Group take over the pavilion for the fourth annual Lockhart, Texas Tolbert-Terlingua Chili Qualifier and Cookoff.
Parents are invited to bring their children to the freshly-stocked pond on Saturday morning, beginning at 9 a.m. to cast a line and compete in KidFish, a free event that seeks to introduce children to the joys of fishing.
Everything the children need, from bait to fishing reels, will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis to children who need equipment to participate in this free event. While every participant will receive goodies, prizes will be awarded to youth who are able to catch the longest fish in their age bracket.
All children under the age of 17 are invited to participate in the event.
After you’ve had your fill of fishing, amble up the hill to the pavilion for the Central Texas Tolbert – Terlingua Chili Qualifier. Hosted in Lockhart for the fourth year, this major chili cook-off event draws cooks from across the nation, competing for a bid to the “granddaddy of all chili cookoffs,” the Terlingua International Chili Cookoff, which is held each November in West Texas.
Along with chili, competitors from Lockhart, Caldwell County and other reaches will be serving up their very best in brisket, beans and ribs, as well as bloody marys and margaritas. In addition to accepting volunteer judges, most cooks are more than willing to offer samples to visitors wandering through the cook-off to enjoy the atmosphere.
The Sam Brown Band will entertain campers on Friday evening, while experienced chili-chef, former Terlingua competitor and Caldwell County celebrity Daniel Law will perform with his band on Saturday evening.
