J.H. runners improve times
On Saturday, Oct. 1, the Lockhart Junior High girls cross country team competed at McNeil.
It is hard to imagine a junior high race with about 500 boys and girls on the starting line, but that is what the girls competed against last weekend. It was much larger and more competitive than any race they have seen all season.

“The girls ran a great race, and even made it through the pushing and shoving throughout the race by fellow competitors trying to squeeze through the narrow course,” said Coach Shelia West.
Overall the team placed fourth to Liberty Hill, Cedar Valley, and Georgetown. The top seven runners for Lockhart were Jordyn Platt, Alex Maderal, Bianca Juarez, Karen West, Kelsey Daily, Samantha Burklund, and Alysia Peralez. Other runners for Lockhart were Klarissa Cardenas, Karsyn Stark, Amanda Finn, Lauren Moore, Yareli Sillero, Adriana Cruz, Jade Ramirez, and Nicole Matteson.
The girl”s x-country team traveled to Georgetown on Saturday, Oct. 8, for a very chilly fast two-mile race.
The team raced at 8:00 a.m., which is a big change from the normal time around 11:00 a.m.
“The girls ran an outstanding race and even defeated some of the teams that beat them at the McNeil Invitational last week,” Coach West said. “Again almost all of the girl”s times improved. These girls work really hard in practice and on Saturday their times really show their hard work and determination to be a successful runner.”
The top seven runners were Jordyn Platt with a time of 13:24, Bianca Juarez with a time of 13:40, Karen West with a time of 13:51, Alex Maderal with a time of 14:00, Kelsey Daily with a time of 14:02, Karsyn Stark with a time of 14:03, Alysia Peralez with a time of 14:11.
Other runners in the race were Yareli Sillero, Klarissa Cardenas, Jade Ramirez, Samantha Burklund, Victoria Espinoza, Nicole Matteson, Jocelyn Coleman, Cindy Sosa, Lilliana Llamas, Olovia Woods, Alex Rodriguez, Ashley Hagan, Shelby Miranda, Emily Flores, Adriana Cruz, Danielle Reynolds, and Lauren Moore.
The team has the District Meet in Lockhart on Thrusday, Oct. 27. The first race will be 7th grade girls at 5:00.
“The girls would appreciate everyone”s support as they attempt to become District Champions again,” Coach West added.
