The Varsity Lady Lions fell 22-25, 19-25 and 24-26 to the Elgin Lady Wildcats at the Lion’s Den on Friday, Oct. 3.
The Lady Wildcats had nothing to lose from the beginning of the first set. They came out hungry for a win and fought for it.
The Elgin clawed their way to the win, fighting for every point they earned a
nd leaving the Lady Lions stunned after the first two sets.
Elgin remained a force to be reckoned with until the end. Lockhart struggled to regain their composure after losing the second set.
“We underestimated Elgin,” Coach Jamye Pauley said. “Even after all the warnings we received… We just assumed we would win.”
The Lady Lions did not play badly. As in previous games, they fought hard, made good plays, but could not close the deal.
Elgin, who improved to a 1-5 record, showed Lockhart that every game should be taken seriously.
The Lady Lions sit in the middle of district standings, with a 3-3 record after the first round. Hays leads with 6-0 while Del Valle and San Marcos are tied for second with 4-2.
The three teams below Lockhart are Lehman’s Lady Lobos (2-4), and Manor’s Lady Mustangs and Elgin’s Lady Wildcats, who are tied for fifth place (1-5).
“Elgin had nothing to lose,” Pauley said. “Coming out on fire… they didn’t want to finish the first round of district with no wins, so they were fired up.”
The Lady Wildcats were fired up, but more importantly, they were determined to win.
Contributing to the game and the scoring in their respective positions against Elgin were Meredith Moore, Ashley Moore, Chelsy Martinez, Jamie Schulle and Isis Johnson.
A. Moore had 11 digs and six kills. M. Moore also had six kills. Schulle made 13 assists and two aces. Martinez had two aces as well. Johnson contributed six blocks.
In the end, it came down to which team was willing to go the extra mile to pull out the win. Unfortunately for the Lady Lions, it was the Lady Wildcats who fought the hardest.
“I really think that Elgin, across the board, wanted it more.” Pauley said.
The Lady Lions hosted the Hays Lady Rebels on Tuesday, Oct. 7 and will travel to Hays to face the Lehman Lady Lobos on Tuesday, Oct. 14. Check next week’s Post-Register for scores and highlights.
See you at the game.
