The Lockhart Lion track and field team competed in the Region IV 4A Meet this weekend, April 29-30, in San Antonio.
The Lions represented very well with the men”s team finishing fifth overall. The top two in each event at the regional meet qualify for the State Meet in Austin May 13-14.
Qualifying to the State Meet in Austin were pole vaulter Alyson Daily, Chris

West in the 3200 and 1600 runs, and Mason Larkin in the 1600 run.
Freshman Alyson Daily won the Regional Championship with a first attempt clearance at 11 feet.
“It was a great day for Aly, after two misses at 10 feet she really showed the competitor in her and made it on her third attempt,” Coach Seth Westmoreland said. “After that she just took control. She cleared 10″6 and 11″ on her first attempt to secure the victory.”
Daily holds the Lockhart school record at 11 feet and will look to improve on that mark in Austin.
Chris West scored double gold in the 3200 and 1600. Chris dominated the field early Friday morning in the 3200 never really being challenged running in 9:41.25. However, in the 1600 run, it was a different story. Chris and Mason were up against some great competition.
The top five runners stayed in a pack for the first two and a half laps when Chris and Mason kicked it in and left the field fighting for third.
“The strategy all along was to keep up a good pace and then with 600 meters to go to really start our kick” said Mason Larkin. “Coach Hippensteel”s plan worked to perfection and we were able to go 1-2.”
Chris”s time was 4:24.59 and Mason”s was 4:28.1
“The entire coaching staff is proud of the way all the Lions competed this weekend and are very honored to have been able to work with such a fantastic group of athletes,” said Westmoreland.
