Every game is important. Perhaps cliché, but perhaps it has never been more true than for Lockhart and Prairie Lea as the Lions and Indians enter their respective high school football stretch runs with four games remaining.

Both Lockhart and Prairie Lea stand at 2-4 overall, with the Lions 1-1 in Class 5A District 13, while Prairie Lea is 0-1 in 6-Man District 16.

Lockhart has to finish among the top four in its district and visits Liberty Hill Friday.

Liberty Hill was just 2-3 after losing its district opener at Kerrville Tivy, 34-26, but the Panthers have won back-to-back games, including 28-21 at Veterans Memorial in Converse last week.

Tied at 21-21 midway through the fourth quarter, Liberty Hill scored the game-winner when fullback Ben Carter scooped up a fumbled snap and sprinted 56 yards to the end zone.

Lockhart, which reached the second round of the 5A-D2 playoffs last season, has district games remaining with Liberty Hill (away), Bastrop, Pieper (away), and Kerrville Tivy. The Lions will probably need to at minimum split those four games.

The Lions’ only loss in district was in overtime at home to Veterans Memorial, 48-42. In fact, they have scored 42 points in back-to-back district games. Lockhart’s offense has not been a problem, averaging 37.7 points per game. However, its has allowed 39.3 points per outing.

Liberty Hill has shown it can be explosive offensively, too, outlasting Hutto 82-80 in regulation during the second game of the season at Panther Stadium. In that game, the Panthers had two 300-plus yard rushers – Carter with 368 and Noah Long with 311.

Both Lockhart and Liberty Hill easily disposed of Cedar Creek – Lockhart 42-20 and Liberty Hill 59-14.

Meanwhile, Prairie Lea is in a must-win mode as only the top two in its district reach the 6-Man playoffs. Friday night’s game at home against McDade is vital to the Indians, who were beaten in their District opener by mighty Medina, 58-13.

McDade is 2-4 overall, 0-1 in District 16 play, while Prairie Lea is 2-4 and 0-1.
