The Lockhart Lions Cross-Country team came heartbreakingly close to extending one of the program’s proudest traditions Friday, Oct. 16, finishing fourth at the District 25-5A Championships at Starke Park in Seguin. The Lions finished with 79 points, just 12 behind third-place New Braunfels, which claimed the final team regional qualifying position with 67 points. Smithson Valley captured the district championship with 58 points, followed by Seguin with 59. The finish marked just the sixth time in 39 years that Lockhart failed to advance as a team to the regional meet, an impressive testament to the program’s long-standing success.
Senior Ethan Herrera continued his outstanding career, covering the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 17 seconds to finish as district runner-up. The two-time defending district champion earned an individual regional berth, adding another accomplishment to his four years representing the Lions. “Ethan has had an outstanding running career at Lockhart High School,” the Lions’ coach said. “Lockhart has been very fortunate to have Ethan the past four years.”
Freshman Eli Estrada delivered one of the day’s most encouraging performances, finishing 11th in a personal-best 16:53, narrowly missing an individual regional berth. Estrada’s improvement has been remarkable, recently running a 4:47 mile during a time trial, exactly one minute faster than his best time at the conclusion of eighth-grade track in March. His coach believes Estrada has a legitimate opportunity to challenge Lockhart’s freshman mile record of 4:36.
Junior Irving Ferretiz placed 13th in 16:59, continuing a season marked by consistency and improvement. Senior Eladio Figueroa finished 25th with a personal-best 17:31, while sophomore Rafael Urbina placed 30th in 18:02. Daniel Martinez finished 33rd in 18:12, followed by Josiah Rodriguez in 39th at 19:00.
Lockhart’s junior varsity also enjoyed a successful afternoon, claiming third place with 54 points behind New Braunfels and Smithson Valley. Sophomore Derek Morgan led the Lions with a third-place finish among 56 runners, clocking 17:49. Senior Angel Silva followed in fifth at 17:54, while Christopher Cano placed 12th in 18:26. Freshmen Ryan Ford and Kingston Metzler finished 19th and 20th, respectively, followed by senior Keaton Archer in 23rd.
Other JV finishers included Keiran Bussa, Liam Moctezuma, Gerardo Gonzales, Josiah Lopez, Koen Cox, Callen Fletcher and Aidyn Hernandez. Although the Lions fell short of their team goal, the season provided plenty of reasons for optimism. With talented underclassmen gaining experience and several runners continuing to lower their personal-best times, Lockhart has a strong foundation for the coming years. The disappointment of missing regionals will linger, but one season cannot erase nearly four decades of excellence. For the Lions, Friday was not simply the end of a season. It was another chapter in a tradition the next generation is determined to carry forward.
