The Lockhart Lions boys’ basketball program tipped off its season opener at home against the Long Creek Dragons on Friday night, with all three teams taking the floor in the Lion’s Den.
The freshman Lions started the evening on a high note, earning a solid 45–30 victory. The JV squad followed with a hard-fought game but came up short, falling 66–48.
In the varsity matchup, Lockhart battled to the end before dropping a close contest, 69–63. Head coach Collin Hart said he was pleased with his team’s overall effort and the way they finished the game, noting that the Lions showed strong stretches of play but still need to put together a full 32 minutes. With only one returning varsity player that played in multiple games last year, Hart emphasized that it will take time for the group to fully gel and adjust to the speed and physicality of varsity basketball. He added that he saw many positives to build on, as well as areas to tighten up, and that he is excited about the team’s potential as the players grow more comfortable together.
Senior guard DJ Anthony led the Lions with a standout performance, pouring in 31 points to go along with 9 rebounds and 3 steals. Fellow senior Tyler Kelley added 10 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals, providing a steady presence on both ends of the floor. Freshman Demonte Anthony also made an impact in his varsity debut, contributing 9 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals.
The Lions will be back in action at home this Tuesday against Bastrop High School. Freshman and JV will tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by varsity at 7:00 p.m. The team is looking forward to another strong showing in front of the home crowd in the Lion’s Den.
