L.J.H. football shows improvements


8th Grade “Maroon” Team
The Lockhart Lions” 8th grade “maroon” football team hosted Elgin on Tuesday, Sept. 6. The Lions played a hard-fought game, but fell short 8-6.
Offensively, Brian Martinez, Michael Aldridge and Dominique Hardaway used their rushing game to push the ball down the field. Martinez scored the only touchdown of the night on a 12-yard run thro

ugh the left side of the line. Samuel Yanez and Dion Turner made some key blocks on the offensive line that allowed bog yardage plays.
On the defensive end, the Lions hustled to every loose ball. Martinez made an interception deep into the Lions” half of the field that stopped a potential scoring drive.
“Defensively, the team played excellent,” said Coach Whitehead. “Offensively we were able to move the ball down the field, but we were only able to capitalized once unfortunately.”
The defeat gives them a 1-1 overall record.

8th Grade “White” Team
The Lockhart Lions” 8th grade “white” football team met Elgin on the field Tuesday, Sept. 6, resulting in a 14-0 shutout victory.
Quarterback Kendall Till scored a 69-yard run for the first touchdown. Fullback Blake Fehr scored on a 6-yard run, and finished the scoring drive with a two-point conversion.
On defense, Fehr had a momentum changing interception accompanied by solid defensive play from Till, Sergio Juarez and Kelly Alvarez.
“We played a pretty good Elgin team who had a lot of speed at the skill positions,” Coach Gilpin said. “We were able to harness that speed with sound fundamental defense. Each week we continue to work hard and progress as a football team.”
The victory gives the Lions a 2-0 overall record.

7th Grade “Maroon” Team
The Lockhart Lions” 7th grade “maroon” football team traveled to Elgin on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
The Lions suffered from a 21-0 defeat by Elgin.
“The offense did not score but had some long runs from Brooks Pittman and George Deleon,” Coach Elder said.
Defensively, the Lions held strong through out the game. Carlos Navarrette made some hard hits on defense that resulted in no yards gained for Elgin.
“We need to work on holding into the ball and tackling,” Coach Elder said. “Missed tackles really hurt us this week. We have a lot to work on, but we [coaches] are very proud of the improvement and effort the guys are showing.”
The team”s overall record is 0-1-1.

7th Grade “White” Team
The Lockhart Lions” 7th grade “white” football team matched up against Elgin on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
The Lions” offense showed improvements, however, Elgin took home a 14-0 victory.
The Lions made some long runs by Devonte Sanders, Kevin Silva and Paul Brite. Sanders also used the Lions” passing game to gain yardage.
Defensively, the Lions hustled on the field.
“The team did a good job only allowing 14 points,” Coach Corpus said. “As a group, they had a great effort. Our offensive line is also showing improvements.”
The team”s overall record is 0-2.
