Martindale Community Library, Scouts Launch Flag Collection

    Residents with worn, faded or aging American and state flags now have a local place to take them as part of a new community collection effort. The Martindale Community Library is partnering with Scout Troop #5651 to collect American and state flags that are no longer in suitable condition to be displayed.

   The project gives residents an easy option for handling flags that have become weathered, torn or otherwise reached the end of their useful life. Flags may be dropped off inside the Martindale Community Library during regular business hours. Those unable to visit while the library is open may also place flags in the library’s outdoor book drop.

   Library officials ask that any flags placed in the outside book drop be wrapped in a plastic bag to protect them and other materials inside the drop box. American flags are often exposed to the elements throughout the year, particularly at homes, businesses and public buildings where they may remain outdoors for long periods of time. Sun, wind and rain can eventually leave even a well-maintained flag faded or damaged.

   The partnership between the library and Scout Troop #5651 provides members of the Martindale community with a convenient location to turn in those older flags rather than simply storing them away or placing them in the trash. The collection also gives local Scouts an opportunity to take part in a community service project centered on respect for the flag and civic responsibility.

   Both American flags and state flags are being accepted as part of the collection. Residents wishing to participate can bring their flags to the Martindale Community Library or, when the library is closed, leave them securely wrapped in a plastic bag in the outside book drop.
