Prairie Lea could win a school-record five consecutive games if it, as expected, takes care of business Friday night against The Winston School of San Antonio.

Lockhart captured its fourth straight victory last week at Indian Field, rallying for a 47-24 victory over Round Rock Christian Academy. The Indians are now 4-1 overall heading into Friday’s contest with Winston, which is 1-3 after losing to Town East Christian, 46-19.

After a scoreless first quarter, RRCA jumped out to a lead it would not relinquish until the second half.

“We were moving the ball, but just couldn’t get in the end zone,” said Indians’ Head Coach Steven Brown. “They had some nice size, probably the biggest team we’ll face all year until we get to the playoffs.”

The Crusaders took an 8-0 lead early in the second quarter with a touchdown and a kicked extra point (worth two points in 6-man football).

Prairie Lea responded with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Gabriel Garcia to Lane Fiscus. Jimmy Soberanes ran in the extra point as the Indians trailed 8-7.

RRCA scored again and kicked the PAT for a 16-7 advantage, but Prairie Lea answered with a 55-yard kick return by Edwin Canepa and a Lane Fiscus extra point run to close the gap to 16-14.

A 5-yard run by the Crusader and ensuing PAT gave RRCA its largest lead at 24-14.

Once again, Prairie Lea responded, this time on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Garcia to Soberanes. Joe Zapata’s extra point cut the Indians’ deficit to 24-21.

Prairie Lea finally took the lead, one it would never relinquish as Soberanes took off to the end zone on a 48-yard run and a 27-24 advantage.

With 24 second still remaining in the second quarter, Zapata blocked an RRCA punt, picked it up at the 2-yard line and stepped into the end zone for a touchdown. Soberanes added the extra-point run for a 34-24 Indians lead at the half.

“We were just wearing them out because we were in better shape,” Brown said. “We run daily. We have three starters who run cross country. But, our blocking was horrendous.”

Prairie Lea put together three good drives in the third quarter, but neither team managed to score, and the Indians still led 34-24 heading into the final period.

The Indians managed two scores in the fourth quarter to finally put away the Crusaders.

Soberanes scored both final touchdowns, first on a 34-yard run and secondly on a 6-yard pass from Garcia. Zapata ran in the final extra point for the final margin.

Soberanes finished with 174 yards rushing on 18 attempts, as well as hauling in two passes for 30 yards. He scored four touchdowns on the night.

Garcia was 6-of-11 through the air for 121 yards and three touchdowns.

Defensively for Prairie Lea, Canepa had 11 tackles, followed by Fiscus and Zapata with eight each, Zapata six, and Jesus Perez five.

Prairie Lea recognized First Responders at the game, including the local volunteer fire department, Luling Fire Department, Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, and Caldwell County Constables.
