PRAIRIE LEA — In a scoring slugfest where possessions were valuable, Prairie Lea committed a couple of early turnovers that put the Indians in catch-up mode much of the night.

As a result, Prairie Lea was unable to catch Nueces Canyon falling 85-58 to the Panthers at Indian Field.

The loss dropped Prairie Lea to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in 6-man District 16, while Nueces Canyon improved to 4-4 and 2-0.

“We fumbled two times and we really needed those, because for the most part we match them touchdown for touchdown,” Prairie Lea Head Coach Steven Brown said.

The Indians are now hoping for a Leakey victory Friday over Nueces Canyon and a Nov. 3 victory at Leakey by 25 points to capture the ever-elusive playoffs berth.

Jimmy Saberones led the all-underclassmen Indians offensively with 22 carries for 275 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, while also catching three passes for 98 yards and two more scores. Lane Fiscus added 17 carries for96 yards, followed by Edwin Canepa with 4 for 43 yards and Joe Zapata with one carry for 20 yards.

Gabriel Garcia completed four passes for 86 yards and two scores. Fiscus also passed for 65 yards.

“We get down 13, but they’d end up scoring again to go up (three scores),” Brown said.

Prairie Lea is off this week. Brown said the team will work on strength and conditioning before getting ready for Leakey.

“I think that’s the most points we’ve put on Nueces Canyon,” Brown said. “We’ve been a stepchild in this district, but some of those teams have peaked and we’re coming up.”
