Long awaited construction of State Highway 130 has begun.

Lockhart-to-Austin commuters may begin to feel the first twinges of traffic bottlenecking this week as the SH130 Concession Company presses forward on construction of the highway that Caldwell County residents meet with equal parts excitement and dread.

V

ictoria Miller of the SH130 Concession Company announced on Monday that lane closures would begin as early as Wednesday, July 1 as crews begin work at the intersection of SH130, SH45 and Highway 183 in Mustang Ridge. As much as possible, Miller”s written release suggested, crews will be working opposite the flow of traffic in an effort to interfere as little as possible with commuter traffic. However, the project still has a great potential to impact scheduling for shift workers and day travelers, as well as traffic to the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

The expected lane closures for the week of July 2 – 8 are as follows:

Monday, July 6
8:30 – 10:45 a.m.: Southbound right lane closed between Williamson Road and three-quarters of a mile south of County Road 179;
10:45 a.m. – 1:45 p.m.: Northbound and southbound left lanes closed between Williamson Road and three-quarters of a mile south of County Road 179; and

10:45 a.m. – 1:45 p.m.: Northbound and southbound left lanes closed between County Road 222 and one-third of a mile south of FM 1185; and
1:45 – 4 p.m.: Northbound right lane closed between County Road 222 and one-third of a mile south of FM 1185.

Wednesday, July 8
8:30 – 10:45 a.m.: Southbound right lane closed between one-third of a mile south of FM 1185 and one-half mile south of Lytton Springs Road;
10:45 a.m. – 1:45 p.m.: Northbound and southbound left lanes closed between one-third of a mile south of FM 1185 and one-half mile south of Lytton Springs Road; and
1:45 – 4 p.m.: Northbound right lane closed between one-third of a mile south of FM 1185 and one-half mile south of Lytton Springs Road.

Miller said construction will be done in a manner “consistent with mandates set out by the State of Texas,” and that all scheduled lane closures would be announced in a timely fashion in an effort to help avoid delays and inconvenience to drivers.

“Safety is our highest priority and we want to ensure that drivers can not only benefit from the efficiency our project will provide, but that they will be able to benefit from innovative safety measures we will be adding to their commute.”

Segments 5 and 6 of the ongoing project will be the portion to affect Caldwell County commuters and property owners most directly. The project is being managed by the SH130 Concession Company, an independent corporation formed by Cintra and Zachry American Infrastructure. The SH 130 Concession Company, LLC includes Texas, national and international transportation experts with decades of experience in financing, construction, operating and managing major public and private roadway systems.
